Over 40 Arrested in Maryland Dispute

Following the arrest and subsequent detention of 42 persons over a land dispute in Maryland County, 15 persons have been formally charged and are awaiting court trial while there is no information about the remaining 27 people who have not yet been charged.According to reports from the county, a high-powered delegation from the Ministry of Justice (MOJ), the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) have arrived there to conduct preliminary investigation into the actual cause of the land dispute.

Maryland County Senator, John Ballout, told the INQUIRER that from what he had gathered, the county's Superintendent, Mr. Sie-Teba Neufville, local officials of the government delegation and UNMIL are investigating the situation.

Explaining further, he said come what may, the old aged land dispute between residents of Rocktown and Wehchoken would be handled amicably as the matter has claimed the attention of the government and the United Nations Mission in Liberia(UNMIL). Meanwhile, a member of the government delegation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mr. Allison Barco, told Star Radio yesterday that taking into consideration the magnitude of the case, government may have no alternative but to bring those charged to Monrovia for trial. It can be recalled that sometime last week, fighting broke out between residents of Rocktown and Wehchoken leading to the death of two persons while several others were injured.
